Kalamazoo-based, Checker Motors Corporation, filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection today at the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Michigan.  The debtor is an automobile parts supplier that makes metal stampings and welded assemblies for cars and trucks.  They employ 246 people.

The debtor's petition lists Walker Tool and Die, Inc. as the largest unsecured creditor.

All of the debtor's common stock is owned by Checker Holdings Corp. IV, which is not a debtor in this case.  According to court documents, the debtor has approximately $24.5 million in assets and $21.8 million in liabilities with 2008 sales projected to be at $61.5 million.
